Convergence, portability hot technological trends at 2012 International ... - GlobalNews.ca

The annual 2012 International CES (Consumer Electronics Show) opens its doors to more than 150,000 attendees in Las Vegas this Tuesday.
This annual technology Mecca, much like a fashion show, will preview the newest and greatest gizmos and trends from giant TVs to HD movie-shooting wearable cameras and of course, all things Internet.
From giants like Samsung, YouTube and Mercedes-Benz, to single small booths from Asia, some 3,000 exhibitors will show off new ways to live, work and play.
More than 12,000 retailers will be here, looking for the next big thing to stock on store shelves later this year, while more than 40,000 senior-level executives from the entertainment, wireless and consumer electronics industries will scour some 149,000 square metres of exhibit space in Las Vegas.

Celebrities are big this year at CES. Fitness guru Jillian Michaels, rapper 50 Cent, Actress Eliza Dushku, Canadian pop megastar Justin Bieber, Jersey Shore’s Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, and MMA and UFC champ fighter Alistair Overeem will promote big-budget booths.
So what technology will be in fashion for 2012 at CES? Here is my take on what is hot for this year:
-The Internet or “the cloud” will be front and centre on devices of all sizes, from connected TVs, personal devices, cameras, even memory sticks. Look for more and smarter ways to be connected wherever you are.
- Wrist watches, corded phones and printers will be in the shadows, giving way to smartphones that do it all with access to your data from anywhere. Cellcos will rejoice with the coming onslaught of unprecedented instant cellular Internet traffic. Smartphones like the iPhone 4S with personal voice assistant SIRI and Android smart phones are already doubling on data usage from last year. Heavy users can expect higher cellular bills and plans.
-Portability is in. Accessories like solar-panelled covers for tablet and eReaders to small portable USB-powered scanners will make niche technology hot.
-Tablet-makers will trip over each other again bettering last year’s 100 offerings at record low prices while chip giant Intel will push tablet-sized fully powered Ultrabooks, effectively widening portable computing choices… and confusion.
-Although one of the biggest tech newsmakers, Apple, does not show at CES (as Microsoft will not, next year) its products always cast a shadow over competitors at the show.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple announces new products this week. Google’s revamped Google TV will do battle with Apple TV and Netflix. It will be built in Samsung, Sony and LG TVs, months away, offering paid-for movie, feature and TV titles. Expect longer wait times for DVD releases of blockbuster movie titles as the entertainment industry tries to stretch traditional theatre revenues.
-Convergence will be big here. Like one-stop shopping for Canadian TV, Internet and phone service from Shaw and TELUS. Expect to see Google’s Android and big TV-makers play a role in easily connecting the home big screen, tablet, computer, smartphone and digital camera, at home and beyond.
-More apps to make geniuses out of smart phones which will be even more pervasive and plentiful than last year.
-Big and small will be just as popular at CES. LG will preview its 84-inch diagonal 4K TV OLED display featuring four times the sharpness of today’s best HD TVs, sadly with no consumer content to watch yet. But new HD TVs will be thinner, lighter and smarter with more computer-like Internet access. Thankfully there will still be affordable TVs for us mortals.  A PC in your USB stick? Yep, actually several PCs, just stick it in any computer, work or play and yank it out when done like it was never there.
